Keeping your state license up-to-date is critical to continuing to work in the profession. Here’s all you need to know.

As a certified respiratory therapist (CRT) or registered respiratory therapist (RRT), keeping your NBRC credential and state-issued license from expiring is essential.

If you allow your state license to expire, you cannot practice the profession until you reinstate it. Practicing with an expired license may subject you to state disciplinary action. Also, keep in mind that if your NBRC credential expires, you may be putting your state-issued license at risk.

And last but not least, you won’t be able to claim respiratory therapy shifts in the ShiftMed app with an expired license. So, as soon as you receive your renewal information, upload it into the app so we can verify it.

Individual State Requirements

While every state has different conditions for license renewal, most require you to complete a specific number of Continuing Respiratory Care Education (CRCE) units and pay a renewal fee annually, every 2 years, or every 3 years.

NBRC Credential vs. State License Renewal

Please note that the NBRC and your state licensing board are separate entities and do not share information. In other words, your NBRC credential doesn’t automatically update when you renew your state license and vice-versa.
