Healthcare professionals who come into contact with human blood or potentially infectious bodily fluids are at increased risk for exposure to the hepatitis B virus (HBV), which can lead to liver damage, liver cancer, and perhaps death.

While not all healthcare professionals are required to get a hepatitis B vaccine, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone from birth up to age 60 be vaccinated.

Vaccine, Titer, and Non-Responder Requirements

Some ShiftMed facility partners require healthcare professionals to show proof of completing the hepatitis B vaccination series or a titer test. In other words, if you don't meet the requirements, the ShiftMed app won't allow you to claim shifts at these locations.

Vaccination Checklist

Generally speaking, the hepatitis B vaccine is an arm injection that involves a three-dose series administered on a 0-month, 1-month, and 6-month schedule.

To secure the hepatitis B vaccine credential in the ShiftMed app, you must complete the three-dose series. If you received your starter dose within six months of today's date, you can claim shifts requiring the hepatitis B vaccine. However, you must complete your remaining doses within six months of each other to be considered fully vaccinated. For example, if you got your starter dose on 1/12/24, you must get your second dose by 7/12/24 and your third dose on 1/12/25.

When adding your vaccine information to the app, you must have/include the following:

  • Your Full Name

  • Hepatitis B Vaccine Label(s)

  • Three Doses of the Vaccine (or starter dose within the past six months)

  • Administration Dates for the Three Doses (or starter dose date)

  • Clinic, Hospital, or Doctor's Office Information

Titer Checklist

A hepatitis B Titer test determines the presence of hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs) in the blood, indicating immunity against HBV due to vaccination or previous infection. If your test comes back positive, it means you have immunity and are good to add your information to the app.

When adding your Titer information to the app, you must include the following:

  • Your Full Name

  • Hepatitis B Titer Label

  • Titer Collection Date

  • Positive/Immunity Result

  • Clinic, Hospital, or Doctor's Office Information

If your Titer test is negative, you're not immune and must be vaccinated. We accept a negative Titer if you get a booster within a week of receiving your results. For example, you can add your information to the ShiftMed app if you received a negative Titer on 1/3/24 and got your booster by 1/10/24.

Non-Responder Information

A non-responder is a person who doesn't develop protective surface antibodies after completing two series (six doses) of the hepatitis B vaccine and has been ruled out for acute or chronic hepatitis B infection.

If you're a non-responder, you must provide documentation showing your completion of all six doses and the Titer results that followed your last dose, stating you don't have immunity.

Adding Your Information to the App

Here's how to submit your hepatitis B vaccine information or Titer results in the app:

  2. Choose the Hepatitis B Vaccine.

  3. Tap on the dropdown and choose Vaccination Record or Titers

  4. Tap Next and follow the steps to finish uploading your Hepatitis B Vaccination Record or Positive Titer results.

Hepatitis B Declination

You can submit a declination in the app if you haven't received a hepatitis B vaccination due to medical concerns or religious reasons.

Here's how you can submit your declination in the app:

  1. Go to My Credentials and tap Additional.

  2. Choose Hepatitis B Vaccine.

  3. Choose I decline the vaccine.

  4. Sign the form acknowledging your declination.
