As a ShiftMed employee, your standard workweek is a maximum of 40 hours (Saturday-Friday). Overtime is only permitted if explicitly allowed by a facility or management company and if you meet all eligibility requirements.

Claiming Overtime Shifts

  • Once you have claimed 40 hours for the week, you will no longer see regular shifts. Any available overtime shifts will appear in your feed.

  • Eligibility to claim an overtime shift is not guaranteed. Common reasons for ineligibility include:

    • You have not yet claimed or worked 40 regular hours at that specific facility or management company.

    • You have already exceeded the maximum allowable overtime hours for that facility or management company.

If a management company allows overtime, you don't have to work 40 regular hours at one facility. You can break those hours up between facilities operated by that management company. Any allowable overtime hours for that management company are cumulative, not per facility.

Overtime Policy and Rates

  • Management Company Overtime: If a management company allows overtime, the 40-hour requirement is cumulative across all facilities it operates. Allowable overtime hours are also cumulative for the management company, not per facility.

  • Blended Overtime Rates: To ensure fair pay for overtime worked across different shifts with different rates, we use a blended rate to calculate your overtime premium. This method considers all your regular rates of pay from the workweek.

Take note that overtime rates in California are handled differently. Visit the State of California Department of Industrial Relations website for more information.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a management company?
A healthcare management company oversees business operations for one or more healthcare facilities.

Do all facilities allow overtime?
No. Overtime availability is determined by each individual facility or management company.

How much overtime can I work?
The amount of allowable overtime is set by each facility or management company.

How is overtime calculated for shifts with different pay rates?
We use a blended overtime rate to calculate your pay fairly (except in California).

Do I need to work 40 hours at the same facility to qualify for its overtime?
No. For a management company or hospital system, you can combine hours from any of its facilities to meet the 40-hour requirement. Overtime can then be worked at any facility within that same group.

Can I use Next Day Pay® or Instant Pay on overtime shifts?
Yes, provided you meet all standard requirements for those services.

Do I need to inform the facility I'm working overtime?
No. ShiftMed manages all scheduling and pay communications. Please work your shift as normal.

What happens if I cancel an overtime shift?
Canceling an overtime shift within 72 hours of its start time will result in a shift violation.
