Quality, consistency, and reliability are vital in our line of work—our trifecta of success, if you will. When we show up for shifts, we demonstrate all three. More importantly, patients get the care they deserve, facilities are happy with us, and our healthcare professionals have access to more shifts.
When we don’t show up for shifts, we put our facility partners and their patients at risk—which is terrible in and of itself, but it’s also a surefire way to get facilities to stop posting shifts with us.
High show rates are what we need to maintain our existing healthcare partnerships and establish new ones. But this can only be achieved when we hold healthcare professionals accountable for the shifts they claim. If you need a refresh of our attendance policy, check it out here or in the app.
Temporary 14-Day Suspension
When healthcare professionals repeatedly violate ShiftMed’s attendance policy and reach show rates well below our standards, we put them on an automatic 14-day suspension. We cancel their upcoming shifts, and they can’t claim shifts during their hiatus.
While this might sound harsh, our intent isn’t to punish anyone. We must ensure a better experience for our dedicated healthcare professionals through implementation of this policy. And while we believe in accountability, we also believe in second chances. We’ll gladly welcome any suspended healthcare professional back when their 14 days are up.
If you show up to your shifts like clockwork and only cancel or call out when it’s absolutely necessary, this policy shouldn’t impact you—other than giving you more shifts to choose from.
However, if you struggle to show up for shifts, consider ways to improve your attendance. Do you need help with time management? Do you need to secure more reliable child care? Is transportation a problem? (FYI, you can request Uber Health rides to and from your shifts directly in the ShiftMed app.)
How to View Your Show Rate
Your show rate can be found in the side menu under your profile picture.
How to Calculate Your Show Rate
The data points needed to calculate your show rate are also available in the side menu of the app below your profile picture. Show Rate is rounded up to the 10th decimal place to make a whole number, so a 29.2% Show Rate= 29% and a 29.6% Show Rate= 30%.
X = Shifts Worked (includes shifts worked and sent home early shifts)
Y = Shift Violations (call out, cancellations, no call, no shows)
X/(X+Y) = Your Show Rate
And don’t worry, facility cancellations don’t count toward or against your show rate (so your shifts claimed may be higher than your shifts worked and violations.)
Establishing an Initial Show Rate
As a new nurse or aide on the ShiftMed nursing team, you’ll need to work 4 shifts to establish your show rate.
Scheduling and arriving to all 4 shifts will reflect a 100% show rate–which is what you should aim for! Be aware that other actions can impact your show rate negatively so only claim shifts you know you can show up to.
The following shift scenarios can establish your show rate:
Schedule a shift and you arrive for the shift (positive impact)
Schedule a shift and you walk out of the shift (negative impact)
Schedule a shift and you cancel the shift (negative impact)
Schedule a shift and you call out of the shift (negative impact)
Schedule a shift and you no call no show for the shift (negative impact)
Please note arriving for scheduled shifts will have a positive impact on your show rate, while cancelling, walking out and not showing up will all have a negative impact on your show rate.
A facility cancellation does not impact your show rate as it will not count towards or against it.
Maintaining Your Show Rate
Positive Impact:
Worked shift: ensure a high show rate by showing up to all the shifts you schedule!
Negative Impact:
Shift Violations: the following are shift attendance violations that will negatively impact your show rate.
Walk out: leaving a shift at any point without facility authorization.
Cancellation: cancelling a shift less than 72 hours in advance of the shift start time.
Call out: cancelling a shift less than 24 hours in advance of the shift start time.
No call no show: failure to show up to your scheduled shift and not calling out in the app before the shift start time.
Does Not Impact:
Facility cancellation
Unscheduled shift: cancelling a shift 72 hours or more in advance of the shift start time.
Sent home early - When you show up to your shift then are asked not to work.
Suspension FAQs
What are the grounds for suspension?
Attendance policy violations and show rates well below the ShiftMed standard are grounds for suspension.
What happens if I get suspended?
As soon as your suspension goes into effect, we’ll cancel any shift you have scheduled in the app, and you won’t be able to claim shifts for 14 days. Once your suspension is up, we invite you back to improve your attendance rate.
What happens to my app access during suspension?
You can still open the app. However, when you do, you’ll see a ˈyou are suspendedˈ message at the top of your shift feed. You’ll get the same notice if you try to claim a shift.
How will a suspension affect my paycheck?
You’ll still get paid for the time you worked during that pay period. As usual, we’ll deposit your paycheck into your bank account the following Friday. For example, if you worked Monday and Tuesday this week and got suspended on Wednesday, you’ll be paid for those two days next Friday.
How many suspensions am I allowed before termination?
Termination of employment occurs following three suspensions.
